Indigenous breeds of livestock embody special gene
combinations which impart them the capacity to
survive the vagaries, yet produce and reproduce in
probably the most efficient manner in their own native
environment. Having developed over centuries of natural
and man-made selection, the breeds and defined
populations are well tuned to the available meager
resources. These breeds have low maintenance cost,
capacity to tolerate intense heat, resistance against
prevalent diseases, ability to utilize the available poor
bio-mass, longevity and survivability under tough
conditions. Moderate but assured quantities of milk, wool,
meat, draft-power, and calf-crop are direct returns and,
in addition, the indirect benefits include manure for
organic agriculture & better soil-health, energy through
bio-gas and a series of by-products.
Coinciding with Bureau completing it’s 25 years after
inception, the Symposium is aimed at revisiting the
achievements and, based on the current assessments, to
redefine the future perspectives on revitalizing the Indian
Animal Genetic Resources to meet the current and future
challenges on food security for the rapidly expanding
human population.
The Society for Conservation of Domestic Animal
Biodiversity (SOCDAB) with a broad mandate of
generating mass awareness about the domestic animal
biodiversity in the scientific community, farmers as well
as general public is organising the sixth National
Symposium in partnership with National Bureau of
Animal Genetic Resources, to draw together the
scientists, academicians, administrators and livestock
keepers to suggest modifications to develop programme
and strategies for more effective conservation,
improvement and judicious exploitation of our precious
native livestock breeds.
Scientific Programme
The symposium will include invited lectures by eminent
professionals and contributory oral and poster
presentations under the following sessions:
Inaugural Session
Technical Session-I
Livestock Biodiversity –Review of Current Scenario
Technical Session-II
Value-addition, Conservation and Improvement of Animal
Genetic Resources
Technical Session-III
Animal Genetic Resources: Legal & Global Issues
Technical Session-IV
Biotechnological interventions in Conservation and
Utilization of Livestock
Plenary Session
Submission of Abstracts
Abstracts are invited for the symposium for oral/poster
presentation. Abstracts may be submitted either in Hindi
or English to the Organising Secretary by post in the
prescribed format along with a copy of the abstract through

location and text should be typed on single page with
one inch margin on each side.
2. An abstract should not exceed 300 words.
3. The abstract should contain objectives of the study;
brief description of the methodology; summary of the
results and the conclusion drawn.
4. The title should be in upper case letters, followed by

The duration will be 20 and 10 minutes for invited lecture
and research paper presentations respectively, followed
by a 5 minute discussion. Facilities for LCD projection will
be provided. Display boards of size 1m x 1m will be
provided for poster presentation.
Best Poster Awards
The first and second best poster presentations in each
technical session will be awarded cash prize and a citation.
Young Scientist Award
To encourage young researchers SOCDAB is introducing
‘YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD’. Best research contribution by
a participant as lead author, who is below 35 years of age
will be awarded ‘Young Scientist Award’ of Rs.2,500/- and
a citation by the Society. Kindly indicate your preference
for inclusion of your submission for the award along with
the proof of age.
